SUMMARY:Challenges in river passages and impact of monsoon
DESCRIPTION:Many of our vessels operate in river ports where tidal variations\, strong currents\, and continuously changing water depths\, particularly during the monsoon season\, may not be fully familiar to the Master and crew. The safe execution of these maneuvers therefore relies heavily on the effective support of local pilots\, as well as accurate and timely information provided by local agents and operational stakeholders.\n\nAny error in draught calculations\, misjudgment of tidal windows\, underestimation of tidal stream strength\, or inadequate engine performance can have serious operational and safety consequences. These risks demand thorough planning\, continuous monitoring\, and proactive risk assessment throughout the voyage and maneuvering process.\n\nIt is therefore of utmost importance to ensure seamless collaboration among all parties\, clear and timely communication of critical information\, complete transparency in operational constraints and risks\, and the meticulous execution of a well-developed passage plan. Only through effective teamwork\, shared situational awareness\, and disciplined adherence to established procedures can we ensure the safe conduct of every maneuver\, every time.

DESCRIPTION:Problem statement\n A large part of the stevedores’ workplace is onboard ships where the port/terminal has no operational control of the design\, construction and maintenance and therefor solely relying on the ships crew and manager to ensure a safe workspace to perform stevedoring activities (lashing\, unlashing and supervision etc.).\n \n There are many examples of ships not offering a safe workspace on deck\, lashing bridges and catwalks etc. due to the construction or condition of the deck and cargo securing equipment.\n\nMotivation\n A safe workspace on deck is a shared benefit for ships crew and stevedores alike. Furthermore\, paramount to ensure the cargo integrity as per cargo securing manual. In APMT we recently experienced a stevedore fatality when a part of catwalk handrail (mid wire) gave way from the force of a person resulting in a 2\,5 meter fall.\n\nThemes\nThis presentation is about cargo space safety with particular focus on condition of rails\, lashing bridges\, catwalks etc. with some pictures to exemplify the situation. Furthermore revisit the discussion that took place in CSSF some 5 years ago re design of cargo space – especially the use of wires a hand rails.Lastly invite for an opportunity to collaborate between CSSF and ICHCA or broadly between vessels and terminals to ensure a safe work space for seafarers and stevedores alike.Will briefly introduce the vessel safety inspection (VSI) taking place in APMT terminals.
